Lucy Collings5.0 out of 5 starsWonderful insights into the fascinating world of showjumpingOctober 20, 2016I love this book! As a person growing up in a time when British showjumping was truly golden, I found reading this book hugely enjoyable.
It gave me insights to those riders and horses who had become heroes to me.
I enjoyed the style in which this book is written. The profiles of horses and riders are a great resource, underpinned with the lovely personal account of Franks life growing up in this fascinating world.
I recommend this book to those who want something over and above the general run of the mill facts and figures.
I have given copies as gifts and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Top critical review

See all 4 critical reviewsLisa Munyan3.0 out of 5 stars HmmmmmJuly 1, 2015The first nineteen chapters are a personal diary and the last portion has short bios and small black and white photos of well known riders and horses. On the back of the book is a really interesting-looking poster of bygone stars, but it has been reduced to such an extent the names are unreadable. I thought the title a little misleading and I have to say, after anticipating the arrival of this book, I was quite disappointed as Mr. Waters' Facebook page is brilliant.4 people found this helpfulAd feedback SearchSORT BYTop ratedMost recentTop ratedFILTER BYAll reviewersVerified purchase onlyAll reviewersAll stars5 star only4 star only3 star only2 star only1 star onlyAll positiveAll criticalAll starsAll formatsFormat: PaperbackAll formatsText, image, videoImage and video reviews onlyText, i-

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, but has potential
July 24, 2017Format: Paperback
This is predominantly a memoir of the author, which could be an intriguing story, except it is so poorly written and riddled with typos that it is really hard to follow. It feels like the author didn't even read this all the way through with how repetitive the language is, in description of circumstance, as well as the phrases "little did I know" and "household name". I'd also like to see a little more meat to the rider bios at the end.

The descriptions of the actual rounds are compelling, which is perhaps indicative of where Water's strengths lie. I'd really like to read this after a couple of washes through an editor, or even just a competent proof-reader. His insights into this period of show jumping history are valuable and deserve to be shared.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book
September 23, 2016Format: Paperback
I loved this book. It was simply written and an easy read . It brought back memories of my life with horses as a young person. We later took show jumpers to the UK in 76., so I had a special interest in it. For people of my generation who have experienced life at the shows in 'The Good Old Days' I am sure they will enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars From Paddy McMahon
February 23, 2015Format: Paperback
Hi Frank, I cannot put this book down, your early years are so exciting, the names bring it all back. Jean Davenport, nee Goodwin, her horse Hobo I sold to her. Sammy Morphet rode with his whip in his riding boot. Curly Beard rode for the Honorable D. Paget, Eforegit & Tommy and thirteen of her horses. As I keep reading, there will be more to follow. I would like four more books to come to my address. Kind regards, Paddy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing.
September 28, 2015Format: Paperback
Interesting subject but poorly written, superficial and repetitive. Also why include Princess Anne, undoubtedly a great rider but in 3 day eventing, not specifically show jumping? I have to agree with the reviewer who criticised the fact that it did not appear to have been proof read.
